Oh, the Irony!
I wanted beef. I was sick and tired of eating chicken. My thoughts became complaints and grumbles to God. In an ironic turn of events, I became the recipient of a half of a cow. (If you are from the Midwest, you understand this…if you aren’t, we can order portions of beef from a local locker.) Someone I knew was cleaning out their freezer and gifted us an enormous amount of beef.
My freezer now full of beef, I began planning meals around pot roasts, steaks, hamburgers, and stews. However, even with my ability to create delicious meals, my appetite began to wane from the amount of beef being consumed. Complaints now arose from the troops…a/k/a the family, including myself.
God brought to my mind the incident of the complaining Israelites who had grown sick and tired of manna. These “contemptible people” who were craving other food had begun uttering evil in the ears of God. So, again in an ironic turn of events, God sent them quail “to chew on”, but while it was still between their teeth, God struck them with a severe plague.
Moses called it the “death of lust”. In their great desire for “other food”, by rejecting the manna, they were rejecting the Lord and obedience to His Word. Their rebelliousness led to death. What God had provided as a blessing, the people rejected, desiring something different. God was calling them to continue walking by faith, but they craved more.
As we walk by faith in obedience to what the Lord has called us to, may we see more than obstacles, cultivating an appetite for the holy Word of God. A great reminder that how we treat God’s Word (manna) is the way in which we treat the Lord Himself.
A grumbling lack of faith sees only obstacles.
A grateful faith sees more than obstacles.
