The Captain of Your Ship

I love water. It is my happy place. I’ve spent many years of my life along Lake Michigan and, later, near an ocean and other lakes.

Recently, I was on a sunset cruise on a sailboat, soaking in every moment. I didn’t want to forget the smell of the water or the sound of stillness when we were adrift. One of the things I noticed about the captain struck me deeply. He was always aware of his surroundings while enjoying our shenanigans and banter, lively conversation and silence. He knew when to engage the engine when to unfurl the sails, or how to watch out for other boats who weren’t paying attention.

Studying 1 Peter reminded me of how important it is to live a life on purpose for the Lord. “Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be serious and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:13). What a great reminder that although there is time to live joyfully, enjoying life, we also need to be always aware of the world around us. The sailboat captain was always on alert as we cruised the lake. It was a powerful picture of how we need to live our lives.

Be ready for action when you meet someone who is struggling with a diagnosis, grief, or some other challenge. Take a moment to help them navigate the moment.

Be serious about your relationship with the Lord. Take time to nurture your walk with God, study the Word, and pray. Invest in that relationship like you do your 401K plan! But even more so because eventually your funds may run out, but your Heavenly Father has you set for eternity!

Set your hope on the grace of Jesus Christ. What do you set your hope on? The hope of wealth? Hope of good health? The hope of a perfect marriage or devoted children? The only true hope we have is in that of our Savior, Jesus Christ. One day, our hope will be revealed beyond anything we could ever imagine.

Jesus is our best example of a life lived with purpose. Are you living a purposeful life? Where are you spending your time or money? Trust the Captain of your life to navigate you, placing your hope in Him!
