You Don’t Fit in a Box
Yesterday, I took one of those online tests to see if my body composition and weight were appropriate for my height and age. The harsh results from a computer-generated agency left me feeling offended and depressed.
Later in the day, I took a walk with a good friend of mine. She is one of the most uncomplicated individuals I’ve met. I told her what the computer test had said about me. She looked at me so gently and said, “They put you in a box. Girlfriend, why did you let them put you in a box? You are so much more than that!”
Then we went on to talk about the grief I have suffered, major surgery, a move halfway across the country, a terrible fall that tore my ACL completely, and the inability to go hiking, walking, or biking-all things I love to do.
Then I remembered the portion of scripture that I’m studying in 1st Peter 2:9-10. Peter reminds us that we are chosen, royal, holy, a prized possession of God the Father, created to proclaim praise, walking in the light, God’s daughter, and full of the mercy of God. With that slight mind shift, I walked into my day a little taller and more joyful.
I had three different meetings with women and was able to share that encouragement with each one. All of them were different ages, sizes, and shapes, but they were beautiful because they, too, wore the same banner. Each one of us is a daughter of the King.
So, just as my cat tries desperately to fit into any size box we have lying around, I challenge you today to put aside the boxes, labels, and generalities the world tries to put you in. Straighten your crown, sister, and walk confidently as a prized possession of the King of Kings!
