RUN YOUR RACE
“Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith…” —Hebrews 12:1–2
In the final days of my mom’s life, she was no longer able to communicate. I’d sit by her bedside, reading the Psalms or just talking to her. Most of the time, she lay still, with no expression. But then, at moments, she would suddenly look up—eyes wide with anticipation—as if something unseen had captured her attention.
At first, I was startled. But then I realized… maybe she was seeing something I couldn’t. Was she looking ahead to the finish line of her earthly race? Was she glimpsing her Savior, waiting for her with open arms? Were loved ones, saints, and brothers and sisters in Christ lining the sidelines of heaven, cheering her home after her 68-year marathon? The emotion was overwhelming. And yet—deeply comforting.
This week, our daughter is also reaching the end of a long race. After four grueling years of medical school, she now enters four days of high-stakes testing. The past month has been intense—endless study sessions, mounting anxiety, sleepless nights. But after an evening of prayer and reflection, she texted me something profound:
“Turning next week into a running analogy shifted my perspective. It’s just the final lap of a hundred-mile race. The Western States ultramarathon ends on a high school track—just 0.25 miles. That last lap is the pinnacle. That’s where the cloud of witnesses sit, cheering the runners in. Next week is my final lap. And I’ve got enough left in me to run one more lap.”
Whether we’re running a physical marathon, finishing a medical degree, walking faithfully through trials, or preparing to cross into eternity, we are not alone. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses—those who’ve gone before us and those who walk alongside us. People who’ve endured financial hardship, infertility, illness, grief, broken relationships—your story is not isolated. They are cheering you on. You are not alone.
And the greatest prize of all is waiting for us at the finish line: Jesus Christ. He already ran the race. He carried the crushing weight of our sin and bore it to the cross. He finished His race for you and me. And now, He’s at the finish line, arms open wide, joy on His face.
So, Christ follower—run your race. Run with endurance. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Whether you’re sprinting or stumbling, He’s got you. And the cloud of witnesses is cheering.
You’ve got this.
Because He already finished it.
